About Japanese postal codes

A Japanese postal code (郵便番号, yūbin bangō) has seven digits, written as 123-4567 and often preceded by the postal mark 〒. The first three digits identify the delivery area; the last four narrow it down to a town, a district or sometimes a single large building.

Seven-digit codes have been used since February 1998. Before that, Japan used three- and five-digit codes, introduced in 1968. Large office towers often have a separate code for each floor, which is why some towns are listed with a floor number.

In Japanese, an address is written from the largest area to the smallest: prefecture, city, district and finally the block and house number. In Roman letters the order is reversed, following Western conventions.
